Which Dealer Fees Are Negotiable, and Which Aren't?

A quick guide to the fees on a Canadian car quote: what is fixed, what varies by dealer, and what you can ask to remove.

Not every fee is a fight worth having. Knowing which lines are fixed lets you stay relaxed about those and focus on the ones that actually change between dealers.

Usually not negotiable

Taxes (GST and PST). Set by government.

A/C and tire levies. Small environmental charges set by government.

Freight and PDI. Set by the manufacturer. In theory a dealer could discount the overall price to make up for it, but the line itself almost always stays.

PPSA / registration fees. Small standard charges when you finance or lease.

Varies by dealer: worth comparing

Documentation or admin fee. Every dealer sets its own. Some charge a few hundred dollars, some over $1,000. Many dealers will not remove it outright, but a high doc fee is a fair reason to ask for a lower vehicle price, or to choose a different dealer.

Market adjustment. An extra markup on high-demand models. It is entirely up to the dealer.

Optional: you can say no

Pre-installed add-ons. Rustproofing, paint and fabric protection, nitrogen, anti-theft etching, wheel locks, and similar. If they are already on the car, you can still ask for them to be removed from the price. See Dealer add-ons explained.

Finance-office products. Extended warranties, tire and rim protection, and gap insurance. You can decline, or buy them later elsewhere.

Know the B.C. rules

B.C. dealers are regulated by the Vehicle Sales Authority of B.C., and advertised prices must include all fees except taxes. Even so, ask for the out-the-door total in writing so there are no surprises.
